Can you give some input as to what I can expect from a 9mm luger hollow point / using a Semi, Rifle ? I agree with Bubba Jer. The 9mm is a .35 cal bullet. The Hollowpoint will gain you some accuracy but actually lose you some pentration abilty. Keep your shots in the 50-75 yard max range and you'll do fine.

I was wondering when you would catch that! ;D Sure, I take the challange. Lets go out on the range and shoot a 200 yard red dot match where you have to keep the groups in a 2 inch circle. only problem is that my red dot doesn't come close to being 2" at 200 yards. more like 6" if I'm correct. But as long as we are shooting like guns, not a problem. We can all have some fun doing it and then try shooting down some liquid afterwards.

9mm =.354 inches The 9mm, MAC. Fit snug in my Iverjohnson, 38SW.. Wouldn't ever atempt to fire it unless the gun was tired to a tree, and I was in a foxhole 30 ft away..

Well that 9mm bullet is built fer a pistol and i put it as a 35 yd. gun! I firmly believe that the 6.5x55 cal. Swedish Mauser can't be beat. My pick fer anything that walks on earth! Nuff said!

I think the only time I would use a 9mm pistol cartridge to hunt deer would be in a survival situation. It's just not a good choice for deer. For me the minimum pistol cartridge for deer would be the .357 mag.

Actually the 9mm is used in some rifle configurations as well. Had a lever action chambered for 9mm that was a fairly nice short yardage gun.. Great for brush. There are better options in my opinion such as the 30/30 or 44 mag but don't discount the 9.

This is one of the best hunting loads I could find for the 9mm. This is pistol data for a 4" barreled gun and the rifle should pick up a few FPS and ft-lbs of energy, but not enough.
Bullet Hornady XTP Bullet Weight 147 grs Powder Vihtavuori N105 Powder Weight 6.5 grs Primer Small Pistol Barrel Length 4 (inches) Velocity 1125 fps [glow=red,2,300]Energy 412 ft-lbs[/glow]
Here's the numbers for a typical 30-30 hunting load.
Bullet Sierra FN BulletWeight 150 grs Powder Hodgdon BL-C(2) PowderWeight 37 grs Primer Winchester LR Barrel Length 24 (inches) Velocity 2358 fps [glow=red,2,300]Energy 1848 ft-lbs[/glow]
Quite a difference in the energy!
Now for a real deer load.
Bullet Sierra Gameking BulletWeight 300 grs Powder Hodgdon H4198 PowderWeight 60 grs Primer CCI 200 Barrel Length 22 (inches) Velocity 2442 fps Gun Info Marlin 1895 SS Lever [glow=red,2,300]Energy 3964 ft-lbs[/glow]
Gee, looky there another energy increase! ;D I think I'd keep the 9mm in the holster and use a rifle. It would be much more humane.

And that's high for bows!! ;D ;D ;D Apples and oranges, but to use your comparison, which would you rather use on deer? Your bow with 81ft-lbs or one with only 20 ft-lbs? That's about how the 9mm would compare with the 30/30.

Mine of course. But don't discount the 20 KE's either. I'd say there are a few dead deer being enjoyed with bows of that nature too. Just saying the job CAN be done with a 9mm. I know firsthand. Is it good to 100 yards? Certainly not. But if you get the proper shot placement, a deer will drop dead from a .17 cal. Use the tools you are given properly and all is well. Would you say a deer would be deader with a 7mm at 30 yards than with a 9mm? Dead is dead afterall.

I agree 100%. I also have no doubt that you were able to drop a deer with that 9mm. Heck the rifle of choice for jacking deer is probably the .22LR shot through the ear.
