I shot His 45/70 the other day with the "special" load and I really don't know what he was crying about. It's not any worse than the .444 I used to have.

I am smelling some BS here. He shot the rifle with the nice, new cushy recoil pad. From 40 yards failed to hit an 8" wide tree.... Recoil on a 444 is minimal as it shoots little lightweight bullets. I see we need to reinstall the original recoil pad and demand accurate shooting here as a proper comparison.

Beleive me guys, there is a BIG difference between the factory pad, a Pachmeyer pad, and then if you step into a Limbsaver you won't go back to the Pach. I have one of each on mime, and the Limbsaver is that much better.

What is the part number for the limbsaver pad? Guess I am just a wimp and the bruise on my bony shoulder is a sign of that. I do however hit my target. I went to Whittaker's gun store this evening and noticed that many of the new Marlins have Pacmayer recoil pads as standard, even on the wimpy calibers. My credit card trembled when I walked in the door but it left unscathed. Sometimes I am amazed at my level of self control. They had a Marlin XLR in 338 express, stainless with laminated stock..... I could see that in my gun safe.

Maybe you just need to mount a really heavy scope to help absorb some recoil. LOL If there's one thing I've learned about the 45/70 it's that you don't need to use shoulder busting heavy loads to deal out a lot of killing power....but they are fun to shoot....for some people. Mine is actually a grind-to-fit version as I had the stock shortened to make everything come out exactly the same as factory length on my SBDB. Here's a link from MidwayUSA: www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=219460also from CTD: www.cheaperthandirt.com/47048-1.htmlJust make sure the pad is NOT the 870 "express" version, these are different pads. I looked at the cross refernce chart over at limbsave to make sure... www.limbsaver.com/cross_reference.php
