I am culling down my rifle collection. I can now see that I bought too many with my exuberance at having the opportunity to do so. One rifle that I am definitely keeping is my 45/70, Davidson's special edition, #91 of 1000. Similar to Don's with laminated stock and stainless, except mine has the 18.5" barrel. I initially loaded up 405gr Rem bullets to 1600 fps and after seeing what they did to hog, I know they are effective. I do, however, wish to use it out to 200 yards. Yesterday after an unsuccessful hunt I proceeded to the Reloaders Bench. I bought a pound of H4198 and Sierra 300gr bullets. The 1895 can take 60gr of H4198 with the 300gr bullet. This put the bullet out of the muzzle at just over 2400fps. That gives me a 150 yard zero, 1.5" high at 100 yards and only 5" low at 200 yards. I think this load should be all I need for 90% of my hunting needs.

Every now and then I feel the need to cull my collection. Often I think that with two good rifles I'd have covered all of my needs. Then I sober up and say the heck with needs, wants have to account for something also. I still have hopes that there is a Sako Finnlight waiting for me in my future. Have you tried that 300gr load yet? I find the recoil to be very different from the 405gr. load. Much more of a sharper snap and less of a heavy shove. Just one bit of advice on the 1895, try the Wild West trigger. It is expensive for what it is, but without a doubt the biggest improvement you could make. www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=188646Don

Although the lawyers may make them say "This product should be installed by a competent gunsmith", the Wild West trigger is a drop in replacement. Here's a link that pretty well explains how it's done. www.realguns.com/Commentary/comar185.htmThis excerpt from that tutorial is worth it's weight in gold if you've never experienced pulling the bolt out of a Marlin before. The ejector assembly, as indicated by the single headed arrow, should be residing in a groove on the inside wall of the gun's receiver, held in place by a locating pin that protrudes into the receiver wall and is visible from the other side of the gun. When you just turned the gun over to check out what I just described, you probably heard the sound of a part falling on the table. That would be the ejector assembly letting go of the action and falling out. The ejector fell out on a friend of mine and drove him nuts. It is held against the inside of the receiver by the bolt and can easily fall out when the bolt is removed leaving you to wonder what the spare part is. Don

Hey Don, I am used to removing the bolt, extractor and lever for cleaning purposes......... the extractor can be a nuisance. Finally this morning I set about installing the WW happy trigger I bought in about March I think. Lots of pieces of gun and screws everywhere. Somehow, it all got back together again with the new trigger. This really is a huge improvement over the original!!!!

Julian, I'm very glad to hear it worked out for you. Isn't it amazing what the right geometry does for that trigger. Until I got the Wild West trigger I didn't know that a lever gun could ever have a trigger that good. How is your load development coming along for the 45/70? I'm just about to load my first .500 S+W mag. for the H+R Handi and maybe fire a few off to try it out. ;D Don

Well Don, I had a motorcycle wreck last Wednesday, my day off. Thursday I went to the doctors and after all the Xrays, nothing is broken. I was however not mobile for a few days. I managed to resize and prime about 60 cases but stupidly went back to work Saturday. I will try to refill some of the cases and let you know. Good luck with that 50 cal!! A friend has one in a revolver, ouch is all I am going to say.
