Negligent Discharges, Accidental Discharges, Unintentional Discharges, call them what you like, all I am interested in is the ones you have had, or any near misses you'd care to share.
I think just about any shooter has experienced an accident while shooting, or handling firearms, and if they haven't, they have most likely barely avoided it.
Share your story of what happened, and what you learned from it.

I had just bought a bolt action 30-30, used... My son wanted to hunt with it in the morning, ( Woodchuck )My wife, and I were still in bed when we heard the 'BANG'.. I investigated, to find My son sitting in the Kitchen, white as a sheet, and a bullet hole in the floor.. He had loaded the Rifle, then put the SAFE ON. for some reason, he pulled the trigger. all's well . The Safe worked.. Then he moved the safe off, and the gun fired. There was a defect in the safety mechanism, and I never took the time to check everything out, at a shooting place. Now I don't trust any weapon, until it earns it.

Here's a true Story, about my classmate. Names with held.. Two BROTHERS were Talking about, and showing each other their Hand Guns, at their home. The one Brother shoved his gun into the holster while it was pointed at his brother. The edge of the holster caught the hammer, and when it slipped loose, the gun fired. His brother was hit in the Stomach, Never made it to the hospital..

I've never had one or even come close to it for that matter. Probably the closest thing that would even compare was the time I was using an old 12ga shotgun that I borrowed for someone for opening morning of squirrel season about 12 years ago. The first squirrel I shot at, the gun broke into 3 pieces and fell to the ground. However, I was shot one time by a squirrel hunter while I was deer hunting. He was tresspassing, shot at a squirrel that was on the side of a tree about 40 yards down the hill from me. A single pellet went thru my jacket and lodged just under the skin against a rib in my left chest. Now, when I was 4, my uncle was "playing cowboy" and twirling a 22 pistol around his finger then shoving it into his pocket like a holster. After about 4 or 5 times twirling it, the gun goes off and he shoots himself in the foot.

This is my own AD. It happened a couple of years ago already. And I have become more careful with my tools ever since. I was having some pretty intense back pains, and taking some pretty good muscle relaxents. Needless to say, my mind wasn't completely with me while I was in the middle of the medicated high from them. I was getting ready (in the bathroom) to go see a massage therapist for some relief while reading a gun magazine article dealing with revolver double action trigger pulls. Being consciencous that I was, I unloaded the revolver while sitting there to "practice". Finished the "practice session" and reloaded it to get into the shower. Decided that more time was needed for reading that article and proceeded to "practice" with the revolver more. Needless to say I was completely awakened by the third (I think) time that I pulled the trigger. I do distinctly remember the sight and smell of the smoke coming up to meet my face as I sat there in shock of what just happened. I looked over to where I was pointing the barrrel to see the door jamb/latchplate nicely blown out of the frame and after getting up to look further, finding three marks in my livingroom walls where the bullet piece had bounced around the room. The bullet had luckily split in half perfectly on the latchplate, with one half lodging between the wall and doorframe, with the other doing the room bouncing. My thanks to God for not having anyone else home at this time. That would/could have been disasterous for them and I. And also, IF I had been even off just a bit more...the bullet would have went straight out my picture window and out towards a highway about 100 yards with the impact very likely in that area. After informing my wife about this, and fixing the doorframe later, I have been extremely attentive and conscious of just where and what is in my hands and under my control.

Man, you are lucky. And it is a good thing you were sitting on the toilet.
