A good friend of mine and co-worker retired today. We did a lot of good work together over the years and it was hard saying goodbye. Well to get to the point. He's moving to a cabin he had built in New Hampshire and wanted to buy a new bolt action rifle for deer hunting. He thought he might want a .308 and asked if I could recommend one. He'd been reading some magazines and wasn't sure what to get, but was looking at the Savage Mod. 14. My advise was that the Savage is a great shooting rifle, but with the Mod. 14 your paying more for the fancy wood stock and could do just as well with one of their cheaper models. The Model 14s are running about $625 on up. In the end I suggested he look at the Tikka T3 line. The Tikka T3 Lite will run about $500 give or take $10, is built better and will shoot as good or better than most Savage rifles. At one time or another I've owned at least six various bolt action Savage rifles and was very impressed with them, but now the bolt action rifles I own are Tikka rifles. I think that says it all. Don

Did the friend choose a rifle yet??? If so, how does he like it? I don't think he has had the time yet. He moved to a newly built log cabin in New Hampshire this past Monday. I just talked to him yesterday and he's still trying to get some work done on the cabin, his plumbing wasn't finished and his propane tank wasn't delivered yet. He's also trying to get a supply of firewood in before the cold weather hits and it hits hard and early up there. While he is 60 years old, he's still in good enough shape to outwork most guys in their twenties. Don
