As many of you know, I have a Ruger 96/44 .44 Rem Mag carbine rifle. When I bought it, it had a BSA 3-9x40 scope on it. The quality of that scope is terrible. It had what I like to call a fish eye effect and it not only had to be tapped on after making an adjustment, it had to be shot also and this was terrible. I put a Leupold scope on it and went to Julian's today to sight it in.
I bought some Hornady 225gr LeverEvolution ammo to test in it. Surprisingly, it had less recoil than the 180gr UMC ammo that I was using before. While sighting it in, Julian and I decided to test out his new chronograph and see if the speeds reported on the box were correct. The box reported a speed of 1440fps, which I think is for pistol length barrels.
The first shots were at 50yds and a little low. I adjusted the scope. The next shot was dead center. My readings on the chrono were 1738fps, 1720fps, 1738fps, 1741fps. From here, we moved back to 100yds. Let me be the first to confirm Dons report of how hard it is to get good groups at 100yds, using a 4x scope.
I continued with my sighting in with breaks so that Julian could check the speeds of some of his handloads. This also gave my barrel a chance to cool off. I shot a grand total of 10 shots with the speeds varying from 1720fps-1766fps with the majority of them in the 1740fps range. I stopped to save ammo and also because the best group I was getting was about 3", which is minute of pig. I am happy with these factory loads, as always, handloading will provide better groups and I can customize the load to what I want to do.
