Haven't really seen the bucks (in the few trips I have taken) chasing any does. The does have been by them selves and the bucks have been singles walking through the woods. Would you still use the calls and would rattling do any good now. I have been testing this on the bucks that I did not want to take right now. They are not reacting like they were. I rattled the other day and the buck looked my way but kept on eating and wondered off into the woods. Am I now at the mercy of being at the right spot at the right time? I think it might spoke the deer now.

Joe, Saturday at the lease there were two bucks sparring. They were in the woods behind my stand and made a hell of a racket. I should have got down and went looking for them but I hoped one would come out near me. They didn't....... They were really going for it though.

The "first" rut is over and the second should be coming. The second one should start approx 28-30 days after the first. I feel that the breeding took place around thanksgiving or a few days after, so that puts the "second" rut around Christmas.
Once a buck loses his velvet, he has one thing on his mind and that is a doe. You may not see it everytime, but he is thinking about them. They will be on the lookout for late estrous doe and those that got bred the first rut, but it didnt "take".

I agree with doc it should be around Christmas. in fact the cold weather this Monday or the small cold snap we get on christmas eve could set it off. I can remember in years past hunting on Christmas eve or the day after and seeing bucks chasing does.

Unfortunately it seems that after we get this cold snap, we are going to have weather much like the weather we had during the primary rut..... warm and rainy, which will inevitably slow deer movement.
