I have been hunting pretty hard this year despite the title of this post. I had an especially good time in the woods Sunday in the AM and a pretty good evening hunt too. I got in the stand around 6:45. It took me 45 minutes to get to my stand location as the water level on priest is down and there was a ton of fog.
At 6:55 saw deer running through the woods (it was kinda dark still) could not make out how big, but appeared to be a small buck running 2-3 does. At 7:45 a small button buck that i have nicknamed little fat kid, because all he does is come into my set up and eat acorns came around and then left. He went up in the woods and i decided to play with him so i grunted and he stopped and looked back, then finally turned and worked back. Then he froze and a 4-6 point comes out of no where (about 50 yards away) there was another deer there, but could not see how many points. Finally got down and left around 10 and went home to prepare for the night hunt.
Got back up in the same area different tree and waited and waited, until around 5:30 pm when little fat kid came back to eat, then ran away and bedded 50 yards from me. Around 5:50 i looked his way and he was coming back in. He fed for about 10 minutes then it started getting dark. I didn't want to get down with him there so i waited and then another doe or button buck showed up and it was decent sized. it worked in about 10-12 yards and got almost perfectly broad side (quartering in a bit) and i drew. Even though it was dark I have a sight light and i could have made the shot. Instead i let down, because I didn't feel like having to deal with processing the deer that night. I admit it didn't cross my mind to quarter the deer and cut it up later, but i let them off easy. I know a couple years ago I would have shot her no questions. oh well ML is right around the corner. I should see her again and then the last thing she will remember will be a puff of smoke. ;D
