I had the opportunity back in Oct. to buy a new rifle from a buddy. It was a Weatherby Vanguard chambered in .300Wby with a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40 scope on it. He let me borrow it for a few days to take it out and shoot it to see if it is what I wanted. I carried it to my brothers and shot it twice and decided that I liked it and wanted to buy it, sooooo....... I did. I haven't shot it since, but have hunted with it a few times.
For the price, he also gave me 1.5 boxes of factory ammo and 1.5 boxes of once fired brass. Once hunting season is over, I will work on load development and will share the results. I bought some Sierra 165 HPBT bullets for load development and if they live up to the reviews and pics I have seen, I think it will be a killer. I am planning on getting an after market trigger at some point too. The factory trigger is ok, but has alot of creep in it. I cant take that much creep so it has to go. I tried adjusting it, but if I get it set with no creep(which feels GREAT), the safety doesn't want to work. An aftermarket trigger will correct the creep problem and also let me adjust the poundage into the 2.5-3lb range that I like so much.

It is a hard push. Not as bad as you think. It isn't punch like a 3" mag 12ga. Decently comfortable and can be shot several times. When I start working on my loads, I will borrow a lead sled to absorb the multiple shots I will fire. I will say that I have shot a few .30-06's that kick harder than this rifle does.

Can't too much I shoot a NEF 45/70 with the lever evolution 325gr ammo it's about like getting kicked by a mule..lol
If I shoot the Winchester 300gr soft nose it's more then manageable. In fact that is what I site in with then fine tune it with the lever evo

Congrats Doc! I've only ever shot a .300 Weatherby once about 30 years ago. It was in a Weatherby Mark V deluxe. I remember thinking, beautiful rifle, great Zeiss scope, expensive factory ammo and boy does this sucker kick! In all fairness I didn't shoot rifles as much back then, so the impression may have come from that fact. If your loading your own ammo the cost goes way down. Midway sells the Remington brass for a little more than a buck a piece, but the 60 empties you'll have should last quite a while. A box of loaded Weatherby ammo is going for $50 on up. I think I'd look into a nice Limbsaver recoil pad. I look forward to hearing some range reports. Don

The LO ammo in 45/70 certainly wakes you up!! I use it in a Marlin guide gun with heavy laminated stock and Pachymyr pad but...... I cannot imagine that in a light old single shot. Doc is gonna need that big ol' magnum with the 60 yard shots we get round here.
