Hey, I would like to put that my favorite size wepon woudl have to be a 243, because it has the speed of a smaller high powered rifle, But still has enough weight behind it to kill the target, (and not an over kill like a 40/08) And if you can tto talk to me visit pwvc.proboards43.com and Pm the user name admin

i like the .243 also. it is the smallest rifle cal. you can hunt with here in TN. it is a flat shooting round that has good stopping power. it is a good cal. for beginning hunters and chidren because of the recoil or lack of it. it also makes a fine varmint and predator round.

Yup, that's a good un'!!! I have a Remington 243 & 7mm Magnum!Tha 243 doesn't have quite as much as the 7 mag. but whose to say bigger is better!?! I've dropped deer in there tracks at 200 yards with both guns! I have to admit that I baby the 7 a little more, cause I sure hate that scope to get knocked off!!!

Remington Model Seven Stainless in 7mm-08 2-7 or 1.5-6 Leopold. I like the stainless because the barrel is about an 1 1/2 longer than the blued model plus it it is very light wieght. I had a 7mag. 30-06, 308, 44mag and by far the 7mm-08 is the best of them all. Never had a deer go more than 20 yards and most drop where they stand. Longest shot was just about 215 yards. Very flat shooting for a short action caliber. 4 pointer has a good point about shot placement you have to make it count reguardless of what you are shooting.

i have a .243 i absolutely love the gun, it beats the heck outta my .308. everyone i talk to says im under powered with a .243, but i dont think so. i use my .243 only for coyote, deer, groundhogs, but with bear hunting, i dont dare use the .243, then i use my rem. mohawk .308

I bought a Remington 700 in 243 for my boys, what do you folks that use this caliber, consider good shot placement. I encourge them to take a lung shot only. Will this round also put deer down with a shoulder shot? Can't remember if they are using a 90 or 100 grain bullet.
thanks

i would say the lung shot is your best bet. follow the back of the front leg up into the wrinkle and put the shot at the top of it. you will see what in talking about if you look at deer pics or have shot enough deer. as stated earlier, the .243 is a great beginner cal. and one that is a great cal. for anyone who doesnt want a lot of recoil. it can also be used for varmints. i think you have a great rifle on your hands.

Hi Doc, Thanks for the shot placement information. I myself, mostly hunt with a 30.06 or 270. Not braggin, but have taken way over a 100 deer since I started hunting back in the early 70's. I keep seeing folks say they use a 243, which I think is great, not just for young folks or woman but for others as well. I was just wondering if folks always took a lung shot or if some take the shoulder shot. I encourage my boys to take a lung, when possible. I too take a lung shot when I can. It is for sure the highest percentage shot, but they can sometimes go some distance, which is not good when hunting on WMA's, if you know what I mean. I sure don't want an arguement over a deer with another hunter. If someone takes shoulder shots, please let me know the outcome with a 243 and what bullet load you are using. thanks

Yo i can tell ya about .243's.I have a Rem. Mohawk 600 with the short stubby bbl. 3/4" dia. i bought it in1971. I have also harvested in excess of 130 deer, most with my .243. I have shot them in the neck the ribs front on chest thru both shoulders! Most any non hollow point or ballistic tips that weigh 100gr.'s factory loaded or reloads will do the trick. I use Nosler partitions if i hunt big northern whitetails or Muleys over 250 lbs. My biggest was 278 lbs. and i used a reload with speer hotcor 100gr. ;D

Can't remember if they are using a 90 or 100 grain bullet. thanks It all depends on the bullet's construction. I wouldn't try that shoulder shot with a ballistic tip bullet, but with a bonded bullet or a Barnes X, I have no doubts that it would perform beyond your expectations. Don
