OK...that doesnt make sense to me.... I was thinking the short actions were the newer (exaple;winchester short) magnums and long actions were the normal cartridges... My 243 still feels like a long action to me and pulls out just as far as the 7mm from what I remember.... Now Im really confused

psycho, If it's a model 110, it's a long action. At one time the only action length Savage made was the long, if you were to buy one of their .243's today it would come in a short action. As far as Savage model designations go, if it has two numbers it's a short, three and it's a long. The same doesn't hold true for the Stevens rifles. All of their centerfires have the 200 model designation, even though they have both long and short actions. In the Stevens 200's the .22-250, .223, .243, 7mm-08, and .308 are all short action, the .25-06, .270, 30/06, 7mm Rem Mag., .300 WM are all long actions. Don

Ok, but then why do the stocks ask you to choose between a savage 110 long action and a savage 110 short action

Pretty fancy rigs. I don't believe the average joe puts in enough trigger time to warrant all of it though. Will be interested in seeing what you come up with Psycho...what scope you going?

psycho, Here's a direct reply from a man that should know, you may or may not like the answer.
Yrs ago when dinosaurs roamed the earth Savage first attempt at a short action was actually a 110 with a shorter internal box magazine and a different action screw dimension than a standard long action. It was called the "J" model or sometimes refered to as the "Intermediate action" and was listed as a 110. This has caused a lot of confusion for guys who buy one second hand and think they have a long action and cant understand why they cant convert it to handle longer cartridges than those based on the .308 and others of similar length. Boyds lists a stock for it under "Intermediate" action. Boyds is the only one making an aftermarket stock for it that I know of.
I hope this helps somewhat, if I can find any other info I'll be sure to pass it along to you. Don

psycho, The info keeps coming. This is from the owner of Savage Shooters Forum: Measure the distance between the action screws.
Long action = 5.062 "J" or intermediate action = 4.522 Short action = 4.275 (All in inches)
Let me know how you make out with it. Don
