Marlin and Hornady are teaming up to bring out a new lever action rifle and a brand new cartridge. I had first spotted the mention of a new Marlin on Sports South's website. They are a gun distributor. The rifle mentioned was called a Marlin .308MX and it listed it's chambering as a .308 EXP. I asked around, Emailed Hornady and even asked a friend at Barnes Bullets about it. My friend at Barnes had heard that Hornady was coming out with a new cartridge, but hadn't heard the specifics. About two days after I contacted Hornady, they made a public announcement about it. Here's their statement: www.hornady.com/story.php?s=481. Don

The short mags were all the rage just a few years back, now it looks like the LeverEvolution is taking off in that same manner. The short mags are still holding their own and it looks like they'll still be with us for quite awhile. Hopefully the same can be said for these new cartridges as well. I'm really surprised nobody had predicted this. With the LeverEvolution designed tip, they can put almost anything into a tube fed mag now. They had to steer clear of existing cartridges that are made with pointed bullets, but a small design change in the case to prevent that and they have a whole new animal with performance to rival the bolt action guns. Sure, Browning lever actions have always been able to handle standard loads, but they lack the appeal of a Marlin tube fed lever action. Don

Wish that I was at the bottom of my "need to buy" list, this caliber in a levergun would definitely rate a very hard look for me. I would really enjoy having a .308 copy in a lever. Just like the way they work and feel for me in the field better than a bolt action.
The levers even feel better when they are SBDB'ed....carrying is sooo much sweeter.

And if I am not mistaken, Marlin did manufacture a small amount of .307's at one time.

Bubba, Yes and no! They did announce the .307 Win. when they were trying to keep up with Winchesters three new cartridges, the .307, .356, and .375 Win. They did produce over 16,000 .375's from 1980-1983. They also produced just under 2,500 .356 Win. from 1983-1986 as the 336ER, ER=Extended Range. None of the announced .307's are believed to have ever made it out of the factory. Don

I came to think about another levergun cartridge that looked alot like this new one, the .307 Winchester.
I did have some data up, and mostly it showed that (in my opinion) this .308EXP is not much more than a revisited .307 Winchester. Given modern propellants and projectiles, it would not be much of a stretch to get the performance from the older cartridge that they are showing in the .308exp.
There is not much new under the sun, so it seems.
