Which one of these options best describe how you take your gun to and into the stand? Now, be honest on your reply and just don't pick the one that sounds best. Pick the one that you actually do. You do not have to reply so that no one knows who picked what. 1. It stays unloaded until I get in the stand and then I load it after I get in the stand. 2. I stalk to the stand with the gun loaded. When I get to the stand I unload it. Then once in the stand, I reload it. 3. It stays loaded the whole trip and is handled with care and caution.

I will say that mine stays ready as well. Unless I am on the highway. But, I hunt on my property so, that is not a factor.
When I bring it inside, it stays loaded. It stays loaded from opening morning until the last evening of gun season.
The way I see it is, most shooting accidents happen from "unloaded guns". My gun stays loaded and leaned up in the corner. My family knows that there is no guessing if it is loaded or unloaded. They know it's loaded and do not touch it. If they thought is was unloaded and then one time I forgot to unload it, that is when the accident occurs.
And yes, I climb up my stand with a loaded gun. Racking the bolt makes alot of noise and will spook the deer off.

I pick number 4, I don't hunt from a stand. I do however keep the gun unloaded until I entered the woods and unload it again before stepping out of the woods. With the number of deer I saw this year I could have spent most of the hunt with an unloaded rifle, just wouldn't have made a big difference. Don

I load it until I get to the stand, unload it, tie it to my rope, climb in, pull the rifle up, reload it. You dont have to rack the bolt or lever to load or unload it. It can be done slowly and quietly. I also unload it when I am by myself and crossing a fence. Unload, lay it under the fence pointed in a safe direction, climb under or over the fence, load it back up. Its what I was taught in my Hunter Education class. Now if I have a buddy with me, I hold his rifle, he climbs over, I hand him his rifle and mine, I climb over. No need to unload when there is a person to help out.

I am seeing a lot of variance in this great post... I also see a consciousness of safety. in following the choices..

To me, all ways can be the right way as long as you are always saftey conscious. That is the most important factor. Doc, are you being completely honest or are you "selling" what you are saying? I can believe the climbing in the stand part but, the crossing the fence part?
