The POOR guy went broke.. practically begged me to reimburse him for the Rifle.. I ran an oiled patch down the barrel. The rifling looks new. I was going to ask about refinishing the Stock, but it can't be done.. There is a circle with an S in the finish only that would be lost . How can I upgrade the area where Finish has flaked off ?

I was going to ask about refinishing the Stock, but it can't be done.. There is a circle with an S in the finish only that would be lost . How can I upgrade the area where Finish has flaked off ? Jer, How is the "S" put on the finish? Usually these things are stamped into them and even with refinishing they are still there. My Mosin Nagant has the serial numbers stamped into the stock and as long as it's not sanded those numbers will remain. Whenever I refinish a stock, I use Citri-Strip. It comes in aerosol or paint on. It takes less than a day to work and does a great job stripping the old finish. Most Russian finishes have a red stain on the wood and then are simply shellacked. MinWax makes a nice red stain that closely matches the Russian stain. It may even be available as Polyshade. a MinWax product that has both the stain and polyurethane in one. If you can't remove the finish without removing the markings, you might want to remove anything that"s lose on the finish and then try some shellac over it. You can check here to see if you can determine what that "S" stamp is: www.surplusrifle.com/sks/index.aspIf you can't find it there you can ask at this forum, they specialize in the SKS and should be able to determine what it is: www.sksboards.com/smf/index.phpHere's another forum that specializes in mil-surp rifles, they may also be able to identify that "S" for you: p102.ezboard.com/bparallaxscurioandrelicfirearmsforumsOne thread on that forum in particular that might interest you is in regards to a 1951 Russian SKS that's being refinished by the owner: p102.ezboard.com/fparallaxscurioandrelicfirearmsforumsfrm52.showMessage?topicID=6993.topicLet me know how you make out with it and if I can help at all. Big Blue.. The S stamp looks as if it was pressed on while the finish was wet..If you can go to the Picture of the whole rifle on this thread, and expand it. You can see the circle just before the inlet on the fore arm. Also you can see where the Finish has flaked off.

Unfortunately, that picture is the only one here that I can't expand. Looking at all the pictures, I think you might be better off just removing all the wood furniture, very very lightly sanding, and just re-shellac the wood. You don't want to sand enough to remove the original stain anywhere if you can help it. Just sand enough to give you a smoother cleaner surface to re-shellac over. Other than the "S", are there any other markings on the stock? Don

Big Blue, Thanks for the WEB Addresses.. The specifications identify this Rifle as a Mod.45 Carbine.. These rifles apparently were Surplussed after 1951 when the Russians went to the newer Guns. A close look at the circle with S indicates that the Stock was stamped after it was made, and finished. I believe the S to be a SURPLUS I D Mark..
By the way, This rifle DOES NOT have the chrome bore
