I remember the Navy issue Winchester 94, that I bought during the 60's for $ 40.00.... It was a 40's Winchester 30/30 with a peep site, and small bead in the front. Had a saddle ring, and all Screws. It was originally issued to a Submarine crew for shooting Sharks when the Sub surfaced to allow swimming. It always shot too high, so I made a front blade from a Key Blank, and it put the Bullet right on target. My Son-in-law has it now..

I have joined the lever action club. My wife bought me a Marlin 30/30 as an Easter present. The basic 336w from Wally world, not the best wood in the world but I love the gun. Doc, Marie and I all shot it yesterday for the first time. I've no confidence in my ability with open sights at all! A Dednutz mount and a Weaver 1/3 *20 arrive today and will be fitted to go hog hunting on Thursday. I know a scope isn't everyones choice on a lever but a small, low power scope should be just the job. I can shoot low power scopes with both eyes open, hope to blood it this week.

Welcome to the club! I think you'll like the speed of the lever gun, especially for hogs. Just in case you get the urge to load for the .30-30, 150gr. Sierra RN over 37.0gr. of Hodgdon's BL-C(2) works brilliantly. Don

Thanks Don, I have read a few places that BL-C2 is a good powder.

Hey, guys. Newby here to say I have a lever-action popgun too. Marlin 45/70. Small rifle with a big bang! This is especially true with lever-evolution rounds. Thanks again to juliang for hooking me up with this bunch.

hillbilly, Welcome aboard. It's great to have another 45/70 fan here. Do you reload for it? Don

I haven't started hoarding reloading equipment, yet. Still a newlywed, father of two with a new/old house and a 6 day-a-week job! Didn't even get time off to hunt properly this past season. Went to work today wishing my truck was one of those I saw parked along the roadside. Someday.

hillbilly, Sounds familiar. I did 75 hours this week and worked right through big game season last year. I'll probably work another two weeks before I get a day off. I'm hoping to get more time both at the range and reloading as the days get longer heading into Summer. The 45/70 isn't a flat shooting cartridge, but it sure knocks down whatever it hits. Now that Julian bought his first lever action, we have to introduce him to the 45/70. Don

Doc, It's been my experience that they have to sew 'em back on if they want to rip 'em off again. Don

Julian has already been introduced to the 45/70. I actually sighted it in at his house and he went out of his way to give me a scope for it. He even bought me the mounting rail! I have since removed said scope due to the heavy cover here where I live, and also due to the fact it left me bleeding when I was sighting it in last season. Cabela's has a scope in thier catalog for $99 just for Marlins with Hornady ammo. It has three lines; dead center at 100 yards and drop compensation for 200 and 300 yards! It also has over 5" of eye relief. May have to get me one of those just to have around.
