Picked this up last week and Doc and I had a hoot shooting it!! The scope bases seemed very far apart for such a small caliber but the 3rd set of rings we tried just about managed to mount a Nikkon 3/9*40 scope. Lovely little gun, I really like the thumbhole stock too, very easy to aim with it. Any reloading advise appreciated.

I really like this rifle. I think withsome reloads or different factory ammo, this could be a tack driver. Did someone say "Rabbit", at 100yds?

Julian, I got the reply I was waiting for, I'll just copy it in here. Let me know how you make out with it. Don
Don,
I use 13.5 gr of Lil'Gun with a 40 gr V-Max in R-P brass with a CCI 400 primer. My 20" barrel develops 2800 fps with that load and is sufficient for coyote types at 100 yards or more, depending on shot placement. I load them as long as I can, but the Savage may not allow the maximum length to be used.
WW brass holds less powder and I don't get the accuracy that I get with R-P brass. I only neck size with a Lee collet die.

Thnaks Don. One question..what is R-P brass? Sorry, Johny foreigner here! I loaded a few today with 12.7gr Lil'gun, barely enough room to put the bullet in the case! The Savage is single shot and I loaded @ 1.85 OAL, so length isn;t a problem unless.... you want to unload a live round, then it is too big to get out as the base of the cartridge is stuck in the extractor and the ejection port isn't that long. This is without doubt the most fiddly cartridge I've ever reloaded for. I may need to leave out the primer to get 13.5gr Lil'Gun.... maybe I can just use a zippo for combustion?? LOL!!! Hey thanks, I appreciate it. Hodgon lists 12gr as starter and 13gr as max. Sierra lists 10gr as max, everyone says the same as you , load hot!

R-P is Remington Peters or in plain speak, Remington. LOL Some cases have more capacity than others. Even if the outside measurements are the same, the wall thickness may vary giving more or less powder space. That's one reason they always say that if you change any component, you have to start with a lower load and work up to max levels. What might be a safe load in one case might be explosive in another. One thing I remember from loading .44 mags and using H110, is that it can also become dangerous to underload certain powders. H110 and W296 are the same powder and fall into that don't underload category. In most situations they tell you to start your loads 10% under max. Not so with the H110. If you look at Hodgdon's load info for the H110, you'll notice that there is a very small difference between starting loads and maximum loads. The guy I got the information from shoots a single shot also, but a break action single shot so removing a loaded round is no problem for him. He's in his late 60's, a chemist(no he didn't work in a pharmacy-LOL) by trade and an avid reloader. Keep an eye on the primer pockets to make sure the loads aren't stretching the pocket too much to hold a primer. You have piqued my interest in this cartridge. It sits in the middle ground between cartridges that are too fast and cause too much damage and those that are too slow and may or may not have enough to bring a varmint down. It is very unique in that respect. Don

Here's some more info I gathered. Don
Many, many Hornets rifles like this recipe:
WW Brass, FL sized Rem 6 1/2 small rifle OR CCI small pistol primer 13.0 LilGun Your choice of 40 or 45-gr bullet (some magazines dictate nose shape) Lee Factory Crimp
This gives 2800 fps or more and small groups. LilGun delivers low pressure in this cartridge, so case life is very good. Do not skimp the crimp; it adds a great deal to the powder efficiency and controls bullet jump.
The 40 is a single shot, so magazine length isn't a factor. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Since it's a single shot, allow at least 1 caliber's length to be in the case neck, i.e. .224", and adjust the length to keep contact off of the rifling. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have always gotten best accuracy with IMR4227. I load my 22H with 11.5gr under a 40gr V-max bt and get just over 1/2" groups with it.

Thanks Don, those details mirror the kind of thing that I've found, I appreciate your assistance. I reloaded my first 10 rounds and the results were a little disappointing. I tried 12.7gr Lil'gun , Sierra 40gr and a mixture of small rifle and small pistol primers, some have said that the pistol primers work better. I have not yet tried crimping but will do so today. I just received some Winchester brass, collet die and 40gr Vmax to try as well. My wife shot it for the first time yesterday and was 2 for 2 on water filled beer cans at 60 yards, she loved it!
