Bowregard and I went hunting today. We got to our spot at about 6am. We set up on the side of a ridge looking into a draw. It was really windy and we didnt think we were going to see a thing.
Well, Bowregard saw that we were a little to far up on the ridge to be able to see all the way to the end of the draw. When we moved up, we spooked some does we didnt see. We sat there for 30 min. hoping they would come back but they didnt. We began to still hunt and found a huge rub line running from ridge to ridge, and a few scrapes. We found a spot that looked like a likely place for a buck or some does to come thru, we ended up napping for about 30 min(at least I did).
We got up and began to make our way back to the truck by walking down a creek valley. About halfway down Bowregard told me to stop because there were 3 does in front of us less than 100yds away. He had shot a 9pt. about a week earlier and told me that I get first shot at the fattest doe we saw. She took a few steps and put limbs between her and I and the only one that had a shot was Bow. He took it and she ran right for us while the others scattered. At about 20-30ft. she fell over dead. Well, we could still see the others and I blew on the grunt tube a few times and they started making their way back. I gave them a minute and gave them a doe bleat and they didnt respond, so back to the grunt. That got them motivated to come back to us.
I let them get into an open area and picked out what looked like the biggest one, and let the ol' .30-30 speak. She ran towards the top of the ridge. We went and checked on Bow's deer and then began to search for mine. We had a good blood trail and found her on the verge of death and put a final shot in her to ease the suffering. She went right down. It was muddy and Bow's truck is 2 wheel drive and we couldnt get back there. He called several of his friends and noone could come, but one let us borrow a 4 wheeler. We went back and picked up the deer, checked them in, and butchered them. It was a great day and I now have more meat in the freezer. Click on pics for larger image.
