I went out this morning to do some scouting. Opening day for deer season is a week from Monday here in PA. I took the GPS along and tagged any notable sites where I saw good sign or good shooting positions. I dressed in camo and took the .243 and coyote calls along just in case I got lucky with a coyote. I saw one during in-line muzzleloader season and sat and called from a few spots but never saw one today. I hiked about 7 miles accorrding to the GPS and this is some thick stuff. A lot of rock slides and underbrush to climb through. It don't make too much sense to do all this hiking when all of my smaller maples are rubbed raw from buck scrapes just outside my front door, but I guess it's just tradition. Well that's it for now, I think I here the Tylenol calling! LOL Don

Good luck on the upcoming hunt. It was opening day of gun season here and I did not see one deer until I was driving home. Try popping 8oomg's of motrin (army candy) before going on a long scouting trip.

Try popping 8oomg's of motrin (army candy) before going on a long scouting trip. Sort of a pre-emptive strike huh? It was a really overcast day today and I didn't see any deer in the woods or driving by the fields on the way to and from the game lands. Hopefully that's not the case next week. I still want to scout another, backup, area next Saturday. It's a longer drive but it's in a more productive area according to last years harvest stats. Don

Good luck on your hunt Don. As buckbuck stated, today was opening day of rifle. I didnt see anything, but my 2 buddies saw some deer. One friend watched them and couldnt get a shot. He said there was about 10 doe and young and a nice buck running them. My other friend saw some of the same deer and was getting ready to shoot one of the does when the buck jumped the fence and distracted his attention. He was watching them as they were making their way around into shooting position, when some cows topped the hill and the deer changed direction. He didnt get a shot.
After we got down, we moved his ladder stand closer to where they jumped the fence and he is now right beside a persimmon tree full of persimmons. If he cant shoot one now, I should be hunting in that stand.
