Hello all, I am new here. I grew up Duck hunting a lot with my father when I was young but have not been much since he passed away. I have not been duck hunting in probably 15-20 years. Anyway, I have never been deer hunting and am looking to go this season. Does anyone know any public land within an hour of Columbia/Spring Hill that I could go and have a decent chance of bagging a deer?
BTW it would be with a rifle. No archery or muzzleloader.
Thanks in advance!

Go on www.state.tn.us/twra/gis/R2_WMA.html or view the hunting guide or pick one up at Walmart. Yanalli is close to columbia, so is Williamsport, but i don't know if you can use rifles. there are WMA's within an hour of you such as MTSU that are not hunted heavily and do allow rifles, but to be sure you will need to view the hunting guide book, either online or in hard copy.

I found this
Williamsport - Deer - gun/archery - Three hunts. Nov. 13–15, 20–22, Dec. 4–6. 125 hunter quota. Two deer, either sex but only one may be antlered (bonus deer).
Yanalli - Same as statewide seasons. All treestands must be marked with hunter’s TWRA ID number.
For williamsport I am guessing that means I have to sign up in order to go? As for Yanalli, it looks like I can hunt anytime with rifles during the season, but what does it mean about marking treestands? Does it mean I can leave it there all season and just mark it with my number? Where to do you get a TWRA #?

Yes Yanalli is open hunting then and you will be able to go when you want. As for the TWRA # i would guess it is on your license or hunter safety card. You can leave your stand if you want, but it may get stolen. I would take a climber in and out or hunt off the ground.

Your TWRA# is your hunting license number.

Do either of you know if Yanalli is any good hunting wise or would I be better off trying MTSU? As far as tips and the like do you have any good resources? Such as where you want the killshot, how to locate deer feeding zones, etc? I saw the video and link on the board about field dressing so I should be good there.

I don't know much about either, but I know Yanalli is probably the heavier hunted area. MTSU is only 900+ acres, but I hear not a lot of people hunt there. As far feeding zones that will take some scouting on your part. I do not know if MTSU has any planted food plots. I'm pretty sure Yanalli does, but the thing you want to look for is trails leading from feeding areas to bedding areas (thick brush areas or cedar thickets). set up along the trail and aim behind or on the front shoulder and let him/her have it. Good luck. Remember fields may be easy to see on, but they always attract people and you want to get away from them. There is/was a lot of acorns on the ground this year, but there may be leaves covering them. If you can find a good oak flat there may some acorns still there and if you set up around that you may catch some coming there to feed.
