Hello, I lived in Cumberland County my whole life but never hunted on catoosa or any public land, my dad has friends who are with twra and work on the area, i want to know how to hunt on public land, your opinion on which parts to hunt. I have a private property within 10 mi of catoosa that i may or may not have permission to hunt it has hay fields , creeks ,pine stands, hills , and ridges, it has not been hunted for a couple years, how should i approach it?

Your best bet is to scout it out. If you dont have a GPS unit, buy or borrow one, go to google maps or some other satellite mapping service online. There you can do some pre-scouting without setting foot on the place. You can also get GPS coordinates to enter into your unit and then go look at it in person to see if it is what you were expecting. I would also go at least 1/2 mile into the woods. Most hunters on public land dont go further than a few hundred yards. You need to go further than that. You will also avoid some of the ones that dont want to sit and wander around. If you get to hunt the private land, you will still need to scout. Also, if you plan to shoot a hog on the private land, you will need to get with the land owner and see if they will apply for a hog permit so that you can hunt them. The rules on hogs have changed this year. You will need to get the 2011-2012 Hunting Regs book to make sure you are legal.
I have never hunted Catoosa, so I dont know where to tell you to hunt or which side is better.

Never been there but what Doc is saying is true. scouting is the key to hunting IMO. Use the tools he mentioned they can take some of the guessing out of it.
