I am looking to get a .45. Preferably a model 1911. Any suggestions on a maker? I have looked at several: Colt, Springfield, Taurus, etc. I have found that there is not much difference in price and I really don't have a preference in maker, so just looking for some comparisons from some of y'all who own various pistols.

Are you wanting it to say that you have a 1911? Are you wanting one that is a smaller frame for carry? What are you planning to use it for?
I am a Taurus fan, so that is the direction I, personally, would start. Of course Colt makes a good one and so does Para Ordnance.

I want it for carrying, but I prefer something a little larger and slimmer than your Taurus, Doc. The pistol I owned the longest and like was a Beretta PF-92 9mm and the 1911 has a similar frame. I will have to look into Para Ordinance.

I just gave the link for the shorter bbl Para's. They have full sized pistols also. One thing I liked about the short bbl ones are the full sized handles.

According to my boss, the Para's are woth every penny of the $1100-$1200 price tag. He also suggested a S&W Sigma series. I want to find a gun shop where I can go in and try some out. Might look at some .40's also.

I think the Taurus 1911 is a great buy at around $600, especially when you consider all the usually high priced extras that are included with the Taurus. Friends of mine that have them love them. One 1911 that I would really like to get is made by Dan Wesson, now owned by C.Z. Either the full length Pointman 7 or their Bobtailed Commander Classic. They do run a bit more pricey at about $950, but they are well worth the price. One thing I've found is that top of the line 1911s will usually have forged frames as compared to investment cast. I'm not saying anything is wrong with investment cast, Ruger has made many great revolvers in pioneering the use of investment cast frames. I would say that forged is better and many companies will charge the same price for investment cast as others will for forged. Just something to keep an eye on when shopping. I also prefer the series 70 compared to the series 80 design. The series 80 has a trigger safety which is more of a lawyer satisfier than it is practical. Just something else that could go wrong that isn't needed. www.danwessonfirearms.com/product_detail.php?id=65www.danwessonfirearms.com/product_detail.php?id=66For a polymer framed double action, it's hard to beat the original, Glock. They shoot first time, every time, aren't picky about what you feed them and are tough as nails. Don Dan Wesson Combat Commander Bobtail

While at the TWF Expo today, I saw what I really liked. It was a Taurus, .45 and .40 in a tactical version. 1911 model with the accessory rail, spurless hammer, and palm safety. Both were really sweet, felt good in the hand and had the long frame that I like. They also had some "carry" models, but I just don't care much for the short frame and normal size grip. I guess I just got used to the long frame in the military and just have a hard time accepting anything else. LOL.

I just purchased this Taurus 1911. www.taurususa.com/products/product-details.cfm?id=610&category=PistolI've been looking at a lot of them, and all the brands including the Kimber, have problems. Nothing that some Wilson combat, or Ed Brown parts can't fix. The things to note are the ambi safety, and extractor claw, but I'm sure I'll be happy when it comes in. Oh yeah...what's with the 700+ price tags on all pistols these days..thank Obama.
