This never fails to astonish me. Walkin' along, you know just minding my own business, and all of a sudden out of the blue comes another rifle just abeggin' to go home with me. I was in a local Walmart today and can't help but takin' a walk by their gun counter and there sittin as pretty as can be was a no longer made Winchester Model 70 Super Shadow in 7MM WSM. Around most gun shops they are as rare as hens teeth, but there it was and for the measly price of $398 including a scope. I've looked all over the net and the cheapest I'm finding these for is $525 without the scope. I took it out of the box and hefted it a might, aimed through the scope at some Barbie dolls and just loved the feel of it. Well needless to say I could let this just pass on by unnoticed, so I dropped some money on it and should have it home in a week or so. Well here's what the rifle looks like. BTW, the scope is a Simmons, I just can't seem to get away from them. Don

I was surprised when they told me they were ending there layaway for in stock guns. I always thought that was one of there best gun selling features. They said they will continue it for special order guns, but that requires half down. As it is they treated it as a Christmas layaway and I have until December 8th to pick it up. I'd be surprised if I can wait two weeks! Don

That is a great buy. I am sure that you will have it shooting .28" groups in no time.

That is a great buy. I am sure that you will have it shooting .28" groups in no time. I wouldn't count on it, it ain't no Stevens! It feels so much more solid than the Stevens rifle, yet it's about the same weight even with the 24" barrel. Given all of that, I still doubt it will shoot along side of a $250 Stevens. Don

The special order gun layaway is only til they get the damn thing in I can't believe Walmart would do that. It just seems to me that they are in the process lately of changing everything that made them what the are. Were they too successful and couldn't stand being number one anymore? Three quarters of the stores in my area stopped carrying guns at all. Even the ones that do carry guns, keep ther diplay racks less than half filled, while there inventory books show loads of guns in storage. I'm no businessman, but that just doesn't make sense to me. Ever since Mr. Walton died, Wal-Mart has gone to hell in a hand basket. I bet he is rolling in his grave at what they are doing to his company.

Wal Mart says they are losing money to the layaway deal.. They say people put stuff on layaway, then never come back and get it, then they have to put it out on clearance because the item is no longer sold and they lose money....
I can definitely see their point on this.. Kmart will start getting more business now!

Well I got to pick it up tonight, but what an ordeal! Firast I had to fill out the usual paperwork and do the background check for $2, which of course has to be paid separately from the rifle. The background check took about ten minutes, and then the guy at the counter had to go back to the gun locker and call for a manager, and call for a manager, and call for a manager. None seemed available or at least willing to come back to the gun locker and get out the rifle. I waited 45 minutes before he finally returned with the rifle. Now he had to do his part of the paperwork, another ten minutes, and then call for a manager again to check the paperwork, another fifteen minutes, and then I paid for the rifle, and then I paid for a State Police check, of course this to had to be paid separately from the rifle. Okay, everything in order, all the t's crossed and i's dotted, now it's time to leave and the manager had somewhere else to go, so there I am waiting for him to return to show me out the door with the rifle. They didn't want me ripping the gun out of the box right in the middle of the store and running amok. They were fine with me ripping it out of the box in the parking lot and running amok, but not in the store. Frustrated? You bet! I don't know if all the frustration of a Walmart gun buy was worth the savings. Don

I tried to think of another gun shop in my area that doesn't allow for layaways, I can't think of one. If that doesn't put Walmart at a disadvantage I don't know what does. When I think of all the times I saw a gun but didn't have enough cash on hand, heck most of my gun buys went down that way. I was at Cabelas today, even they let you put 25% down and pay off the rest in three months. Of course at the prices they're asking they almost have to have a layaway. Don

juliang, I don't see too many good deals on the internet for new rifles. A lot of great sites for MilSurp guns. There are some decent deals on new guns, but by time you get done paying the shipping and FFL transfer fees, the local shops seem to work out better. Of course I'm always more than willing to be pointed in the right direction if you know of a good site? Don
