I went out this morning and got a new Rifle. It is Remington mdl 700 7MM Mag, and I topped it off with Bushnell 6X18X50mm scope. Pics later, got to go sight it in.

Sounds good... I however dont like the magnification of the scope... A close shot will be a little difficult.. The 7mm is a great cartridge.. Cant wait to see the pics!

Sounds like a perfect set up to me. Folks don't buy a 7mag for close shots anyway. They are great for highlines and pastures and such and besides, South Louisiana is very flat. You wouldn't have any difficulty taking a deer at 30 yards on 6 power if it did happen to come out that close. I have a highline on one section of land that I hunt that you can see over 800 yards, not that I would shoot that far but, if you knew how your 7mag drops, you can easily take one at 500 yards. I know mine sighted in at 100 yards dropped something like 6 inches at 300 yards.

teambateau, Congrats on your new rifle. I look forward to your pics and seeing how you do at the range with it. A 6-18x50 scope is too much scope for me, with the exception of my varmint rifle. While the 6x setting should be fine for most hunting situations, my 7mm WSM is wearing a 6X, I know I would never need the 18x magnification for the ranges at which I hunt. I find I'm leaning more towards smaller lighter scopes than I had in the past, but 99.9% of my hunting ends in a shot that's under 100 yards. If that size scope fits your hunting situation, then by all means go with it. I'll bet it does add a bit of weight to the gun though. Don

Ok here it is, I got it sighted in as good as I can for now. it is 2in high and 1in to the right. I will have to do something with it during the summer, I ran out of windage adjustment thats why it is 1 in to the right. Other than that, the gun shoots like a dream, groups good, recoil is mild, I could shoot this thing all day and not feel it in my shoulder. As far as the scope goes, yes it is a little much, but for the price, I had to get it, it was only $130.00. If I have a spot to hunt where I will be shooting real close I have a Shotgun that puts a slug 1in high & 1in to the right at 60 yards and will throw some mean Buckshot.

Adding weight to a 7mag is a good thing. That's great. I told you last night that the Remington 7mags don't kick. I have shot a box of shells thru mine target practicing and didn't have on a shirt and it didn't even put a redmark on me. They are sweet shooting guns. And very accurate.

7mm mag has more kick than any other deer rifle... I have big shoulders and if I shot a box of shells through mine, id be lightly bruised.

The recoil is going to depend alot on the loads used. I used 140gr. in my 7mm Rem Mag and the newer 7mm WSM and both were very easy on the shoulder. Less felt recoil than my 30/06 loads. Don

7mm mag has more kick than any other deer rifle... I have big shoulders and if I shot a box of shells through mine, id be lightly bruised. I'm 5'6" and 160#'s soaking wet and I have shot my Remington 7mag with 150 grain bullets in it 13 times just as fast as I could bolt them in and reload and it didn't leave any marks and that was the time I did it without a shirt on. Ask BigDawg, he was there. I shot 3 boxes of ammo up one day and it did nothing at all to me. No bruises, no red marks, no nothing. psycho, you must be young and tender. ;D however, BigDawg has a Winchester 7mag and he shot it one time thinking that it shot like mine. He had his eye too close to the scope and it busted him open. He's had that gun for 2 years now and still only shot it the one time. Actually, I would think that a 300mag would have more recoil than any other deer gun but, I have never shot one. It probably has everything to do with the gun. the weight of the gun and the loads as bigblue states.

The stock configuration also plays a part. The more inline the butt stock is with the barrel, the less recoil I feel. My worst was the Buffalo Classic 45/70 when it still wore that #@^&%*$ steel butt plate. It would turn your shoulder all kinds of nice colors, not to mention the outright cuts it had left. I cut the stock straight, added a proper recoil pad and no more cuts or colors. It's funny, but some cartridges just seem to shove your shoulder, while others slam it. The 45/70 is more of a heavy shove. The worst cartridge I ever fired for recoil was the Weatherby .300 mag. Don

As I said, I have never shot a 300mag. But, I ain't skeert to shoot anything. However, I used to use an old Mossberg 308 that was probably made in the late 60's and that bugger would leave one heck of a bruise on me if I shot it 3 times or more in a row. However, it would roll a deer at 200 yards with a body shot. What is funny is the way I shoot. With short arms, it is uncomfortable to put any gun up to my shoulder. I have developed a habbit of putting it up to right above my bicept under my shoulder. I've had people rag me about that and say that is not the "correct" way to shoot a rifle so, I ask them to step out on my range and I will out shoot any of them any day of the week.

I dont like recoil, but Im getting alot better.... I can take a 12ga slug for several shots... Now thats a kicking mother trucker I think anything with the words 12ga, 3" and high brass in the same sentence hurts when shot. I dont understand you running out of windage Team. Is the scope sitting on the rifle straight and square? Was the wind blowing really hard to the right? Did you allow the barrel to cool between shots? Did you clean between each shot or leave the barrel dirty? Just a few things I am wondering.
